Choosing Furniture for the Living Room

Choosing Furniture for the Living Room

The living room is an important place in the house. It is the place where the family spends a lot of their time together and it also where the guests spend most of their time. This means that you should carefully choose its furniture to meet your needs and to match your decorating style. The tips below will help you choose the right furniture for your living room.

Decide on the theme and the use of the furniture

The design theme you will use to decorate your home will determine the kind of furniture to use. Some of the themes are contemporary, modern, casual, old world and traditional.
For a contemporary or modern theme, the furniture is sleek with clean lines and with neutral colors such as beige and white. There is more use of metal, shiny black lacquer and glass materials on the furniture. A casual theme has the furniture decorated in small prints, plaid and with other patterns. It is cozy and friendly. Old world theme has furniture in Italian, Spanish and French designs combined. You can use antique furniture in earthy colors that are deep. The traditional theme has elegant furniture, which looks formal. You will find the furniture with skirted bottoms and rolled arms and in colors ranging from ivory to red among other colors. Having a theme will ensure that you choose furniture that fits your theme.
Aside from the theme, how you use the room will determine the kind of furniture to have. If it is for regular family use, choose stain resistant and strong furniture. For occasional use, you can go for fragile furniture with delicate fabrics. If the room has inbuilt architecture, you may have to choose the furniture that will complement the look. For instance, a rustic fireplace may require the use of cabin décor instead of modern furniture.

Take measurements

Measure your living room using a tape measure and consider the measurements for alcoves and recessed spaces. Use a grid or a plain paper to create the floor plan and to know the space you have for the furniture. Sketch various ways that the furniture can fit in the room and make sure you leave at least one-meter space between furniture. Also, note the width of the doorway to ensure the furniture can fit in. After you have decided on where to place the furniture, mark the floor spaces with a painter’s tape. This will give you an actual feel of how the room will look like.

Arranging and Furnishing a Hallway

Arranging and Furnishing a Hallway

A hallway’s decoration is limited by the amount of space available, which only allows placement of a few pieces of furniture. Despite that, you can transform it by arranging work of art and collectibles on the walls and keeping it well lit. You may also include the few pieces of furniture that can fit. The tips below will help you to arrange your hallway well.

Leave enough passing space

The main role of a hallway is to allow passage. You should therefore arrange it in such a way that people could pass easily. Clear the areas with sharp turns such as near the bedroom and bathroom door to prevent bumps during the night. In case you decide to place furniture or floor accessories on the hallway, make sure you have enough lighting. Place small items that are not likely to obstruct the passage. You may use wall-hugging items like the demi-lune console that has curved edges. Furthermore, place small items instead of large ones. A hall bench that has compact seating is a nice choice.

Decorate the hallway

Despite having few furnishings, the hallway should also look great. Apply a fresh coat of paint on the walls in lavender or persimmon glossy shades. Use soft vanilla enamel to freshen up the doors, frames and moldings. To create the gallery look on the hallway, you can arrange a few pieces of art that are related and have equal proportions. Use gooseneck lights or wall scones to light large pieces of art as well as enhancing dark hall with no natural light.

Furnishing a Bedroom with a Bed, Couch and Carpet

Furnishing a Bedroom with a Bed, Couch and Carpet

A room can be made or be broken by how the furniture is arranged. This is no exception with the bedroom. The room can also have other furniture such as a couch apart from the bed. This makes the room multifunctional where it can serve both as a bedroom and as a sitting area. Where to place the bed and the couch depends on the purpose of the room.

Placing the bed

In most cases, the bed is usually the focal point of the bedroom. It is however, the purpose of the room that determines where the bed will be positioned. In master bedroom, the bed takes the center stage, and it is the dominant feature. It is placed where you can see it from the door with the common position being the placing of the headboard at the center of one of the walls. The head can also be placed in a corner to create more space on both sides and to create a casual effect. The alternative position is to place the bed against the wall. This position is common in guest bedrooms or in a room that has other activities such as exercising or as a part- time family room. Placing the bed this way allows for more space. The only problem is that making the bed is inconveniencing.

Where to place the couch

The couch in the bedroom provides somewhere to sit. Where it is placed depends on the purpose of the bedroom. To allow for conversations between a person on the bed and the one sitting on the couch, it should be placed facing the bed near the wall in front of the window. Placing the couch at the bed’s foot provides an area for conversation that is detached from the bed. People can hold conversations on the couch without associating with the bed. This works well when the bedroom doubles up as the sitting room where the bed is not the focal point. You can also position the couch against the wall where it can face either the bed’s foot or side. To create harmony in the room, decorate the couch and the bed using coordinated cushions.

Decorating Your Home with Glass Table

Using glass to decorate can freshen and build character to your home. Glass allows the flow of light and accent colors from one room to the other regardless of whether you have used it in end tables or mason jars that are personalized. You can also bring out your decorating theme with glass on tables of specific styles and shapes and on goblets or curvy glass lamps.

Decorating with end tables

You can use end tables to decorate your home by gathering vintage glass top or small antique end tables around the home. You may opt to clean and paint the metal part of the tables, or you can leave them as they are if you want a shabby style. A number of small tables with stained or clear glass tops can also be used as room accents. You can decorate the tables by hanging small ornaments made of stained glass on the table’s metal railings. For the tables to reflect natural light to the room better, you can line them under the window along the patio or in the living room. Use tables of different heights for an attractive display.
