Ideas on How to Use a Desk in the Living Room

If you want your living room also to become your home office, you may be faced with a challenge of how to include a desk without disrupting order. You will need to find for it a place in the room where it is less disruptive. Make sure that the desk is placed out of sight on the happenings of the living room. The desk should not be highly noticeable when one is sitting at the couch or watching TV. If there is no other place to put the desk except where it is visible, try to block it using a freestanding wall unit or a bookshelf.

A room divider can give the desk the much-needed privacy from the prying eyes of other people in the living room. The divider separates the desk from the sitting area in the living room and provides privacy when working. Some of the dividers that you may use are a folding screen, curtains or a large piece of furniture. A folding screen can be placed when working and be removed when not needed to open up the room. Curtains can be hanged on the ceiling using a track in order to separate the desk from the other parts of the living room.

Other large furniture such as a cabinet or a bookcase can also act as a room divider. Place the desk behind the furniture so that it is blocked from the seating area. If you do not want guests to see the desk, a room divider is not enough because it only conceals the desk without hiding it. To hide it completely, use a closet, if your living room has one. This will enable you to hide the desk and other items from the guests, especially when you are entertaining. Just make sure that the closet is situated on a corner where it will be of fewer disturbances. You may include shelves in the closet where you will place other items such as office supplies.

Furniture to Use with Leather Sofa

Furniture to Use with Leather Sofa

A leather sofa makes the living room feel natural. You can use it to enhance your existing décor and color scheme by surrounding it with other pieces. The sofa’s color, construction, embellishments and finishes can form a good basis for designs of other complementary pieces.

Lodge style décor

If you prefer lodge décor, use pieces that are lodge inspired to help you convey the natural ambiance. Use a huge brown leather sofa that has chubby cushions and with rolled arms as the basis for other furnishings. The sofa should also have a distressed finish. To pair it up, use comfortable armchairs that have been upholstered in tartan plaids with coal black, forest green, sunny yellow and barn red colors. The coffee table should be an aromatic cedar chest painted with checkerboard on top. This will provide a lasting game board. Each side of the sofa should spot an end table that is made out of a tree trunk. The furnishings will help to create the lodge-inspired decor.

City look

For the contemporary urban look in your living room, use a black leather sofa that is sleek. The complementary pieces should portray the modern theme. Use glass top accent tables that have shiny chrome legs. You may also opt to use acrylic tables with sharp angles and straight lines. To connect the sofa and chairs visually, include a pair of chairs upholstered in a pattern of zebra stripes. Place at the centre a huge ottoman of white leather and stylish tufting. Decorating Ideas on Kids Furnishings

Kids love lively things, and this extends even to their bedrooms. You therefore, need to be creative when making the bedroom furnishings attractive and lively. Due to the choosy mode, make sure you are aware of what the child likes before making any decorations. The tips below will help you to make your kids furnishings lively.

Choose the right furnishings

Being a kid’s room, you need to use furniture whose size is proportional to the kid. Get tables and chairs that are small to ensure that the kid can easily use them. Large furniture will be uncomfortable for the child.

Use a theme for the furnishings

Your child may be into movies and cartoons and would want their room to be designed based on these themes. Decide on the theme to use and do not forget to include your child’s input when making the final decision. This is their room, and they should love its design.
It may be above your budget to use a bed frame with a design of your kid’s favorite cartoon character, but that does not mean foregoing on the theme altogether. Look for ways to portray the theme without overspending. For instance, you can create wooden frame with the kid’s favorite character or theme and place it on the bed’s backrest. Paint the bed frame with the theme’s color. Use wallpapers with the same theme and you can include stickers and posters and place them on doors, walls and mirrors. Ensure that the tables and chairs have the same color combination with the theme. As long as you use a theme that your child loves, they will love the furnishings.

Unusual Curtain Tiebacks Ideas

Unusual Curtain Tiebacks Ideas

A tieback can give curtains a new lease of life, especially if it is the unusual type and not the usual sash style or tassel tiebacks. The unusual tiebacks can also make your basic curtains to become head turners. You can turn your everyday items into curtain accessories that will look good on your curtains. You need to be style savvy and have a do-it-yourself initiative to make this work. Despite that, provided below are some unusual curtain tieback ideas that can turn your curtains in to head turners.

Using ties

Neckties can form good curtain tiebacks. They come in interesting patterns and endless colors making them suitable for any room. For instance, you can have black and white gingham tie on one curtain and a black and white paisley on the other. Color binds the two different patterns together and helps to maintain visual interest. You can use the ties in an understated bedroom, a den or a home office. If your living room is edgy, you can spice it up by using a black or red leather tie while a black bow tie can be used to include a formal touch. To use the ties on the curtains, tie them as you would on the neck. You may also wrap them around the curtains to form a bow or a knot.

Rope on curtains

If your decorating theme is rustic, country or western, you may use rope tiebacks. Take a used rope of about 2 feet and tie it around the curtains using a Honda knot that is figure 8 like. Dangle about a foot of the excess rope to a horseshoe or a wrought iron hook that is on the wall.
Curtains that do well with the ropes are canvas, hemp or organic cotton curtains. You may also use curtains with colorful prints such as those on saddle blankets or cowboy bandanas. The hooks that are hidden behind the curtains ensure the accessories are in place.

Designing and furnishing a Zen bedroom

Designing and furnishing a Zen bedroom

The contemporary times are demanding that rooms should have multiple functions. A Zen bedroom provides just that. In as much as the decorations involve the use of Japanese accessories and relaxing colors, the Zen design also provides flexibility. The room can easily be transformed into its required use such as for projects, exercise or guests because its dividers and furnishings are easily movable.

Plan

The first thing in your Zen bedroom project is to plan. Have a layout that shows where the furniture will be placed. Use a floor plan on a piece of paper and use paper cutouts representing the furniture and the accessories to try out various arrangements based on the functions of the bedroom. The bedroom functions will determine the kind of cutouts you will have such as those for the bed, desk, cabinets and other needed items that will be on the floor. Arrange the cutouts on the floor plan until you are satisfied with the arrangements. While planning, mark areas that have immovable items such as the fireplace and the door openings. This will help you to have a harmonious design and a space that is not crowded.

Choose the colors

The Zen theme requires the use of soft and neutral colors. Soft colors maintain the Zen style of meditating. Some of the neutral colors that can be used in decorating are cream, black, taupe, gray, brown and tan. To create a calming mood in the bedroom, you can use green and blue colors. For a relaxed atmosphere, use tan or blue walls paired with cream bedding and dark brown furniture. You can also go bold with your decorations and use black furniture, cream walls and taupe bedding. Accent this with rust, deep orange or touches of red. The dynamic contrasts are still suitable for the Zen theme.
