If you want your living room also to become your home office, you may be faced with a challenge of how to include a desk without disrupting order. You will need to find for it a place in the room where it is less disruptive. Make sure that the desk is placed out of sight on the happenings of the living room. The desk should not be highly noticeable when one is sitting at the couch or watching TV. If there is no other place to put the desk except where it is visible, try to block it using a freestanding wall unit or a bookshelf.
A room divider can give the desk the much-needed privacy from the prying eyes of other people in the living room. The divider separates the desk from the sitting area in the living room and provides privacy when working. Some of the dividers that you may use are a folding screen, curtains or a large piece of furniture. A folding screen can be placed when working and be removed when not needed to open up the room. Curtains can be hanged on the ceiling using a track in order to separate the desk from the other parts of the living room.
Other large furniture such as a cabinet or a bookcase can also act as a room divider. Place the desk behind the furniture so that it is blocked from the seating area. If you do not want guests to see the desk, a room divider is not enough because it only conceals the desk without hiding it. To hide it completely, use a closet, if your living room has one. This will enable you to hide the desk and other items from the guests, especially when you are entertaining. Just make sure that the closet is situated on a corner where it will be of fewer disturbances. You may include shelves in the closet where you will place other items such as office supplies.
