Venetian blinds, just as any other blinds are prone to dust, which means that they should be cleaned often. There are various ways of cleaning these blinds from the simple wiping to the thorough cleaning. The method of cleaning depends on type of blinds with older ones being made of plastic and metal and the newer ones made of wood. Before you start cleaning, check if there are problem spots such as stains and sticky areas. Wipe them off first with paper towels. If there are curtains on the blinds, tie them back.
Method 1- cleaning with hands
In this method, blinds are cleaned with gloves in hands. Start by shutting the blinds and then put on the gloves. The preferable gloves are soft cotton gloves though you can still use dust attractant gloves or clothes dryer sheets. Your old cotton socks can also come in handy if you do not have gloves and so will the paper towels. When cleaning wooden blinds ensure the gloves are dry before you wipe the slats. Metallic and synthetic polymers blinds can be cleaned using gloves that have been dampened with water or a cleaning spray that is non-sticky. Make sure that the spray is suitable for the material you are cleaning so that you do not leave streaks on the blinds. Wipe the slats by running the fingers from the center to the right edge and then to the left edge. Open the blinds and shut it the opposite way. Run the fingers over the slats just like on the other side. Open the slats and run fingers under them. Make sure you dust off or change the gloves regularly when cleaning.
Using a vacuum cleaner
Attack a soft brush to the vacuum cleaner nozzle. Close the blinds slats and move the vacuum nozzle with the soft brush over them. Hold the blind as you clean to prevent it from banging as you move the nozzle.Vacuum the blinds from the center going outwards towards the left and then to the right. Once you are complete, open the slats and shut in order to clean the other side.
Cleaning by removing the blinds from the window
This method is suitable on a sunny day so that the blinds can dry. It consists removing the blinds from the windows to give them a thorough cleaning. Add detergent to a bucket full of warm water. Get a mild spray cleaner bottle, a broom and a garden hose. Raise and remove the blinds from the window and hang them on the fence. Close the blinds and spray them using mild spray cleaner. Leave them for one minute and then dip the broom in the soapy water and scrub the blinds from side to side. After you finish with one side, close the blinds and open the other side to clean it. Rinse all the surfaces thoroughly using a garden hose. Allow the blinds to dry before returning them to the window. After they dry, hang them back on the window.
