Furnishing a dining room

Furnishing a dining room

A dining room or dining area can be multipurpose and not just the place for taking meals. The way you furnish it should be based with the use you have for it and the space available. Your theme and the style you want to use also determine the furnishings to use. Furnish your dining room by following the tips provided for the best results.

Consider the space available

A large dining room needs bigger furnishings. Make sure that the table and the chairs are not too small but proportional to the room. If there is enough space, you can include other furniture such as cabinets and sideboard. You can also go bigger rugs and drapes, and have bigger chairs. For a smaller dining room, smaller sized furniture is preferred. You may only have the space for table and chairs. You may not have the space for big rugs and drapes and your window may have to do with simple panels and blinds. The small size of the dining room may only fit a small table. A round one can be more appropriate though if the room is narrow, a rectangular table that is narrow is suitable. Before buying the table, take measurements to ensure that the table will fit and space will be left for people to maneuver. You may have to opt for armless chairs because they do not take much space and you will be left with moving space. Furniture made of acrylic or glass may create an illusion of space and therefore suitable for a small dining room.

Dining room use

Will you be using the dining room everyday or occasionally? If it is for everyday use, strong furniture that cleans easily is preferable. Other uses such as working from there, holding conversations and reading mean that you should get comfortable chairs. A hardly used dining room can have delicate fabrics and finishing especially if it is for entertaining.

Lighting

You can use pendants, chandeliers, floor lamps and scones to light the room. Remember to include a dimmer switch to enable you to adjust the light depending on the occasion. You would not want to have your candle lit dinner with glaring light. If it is where you work from, then appropriate lighting is needed. In case your dining room is small, use a small chandelier for lighting. This will make your space see larger. A large chandelier in a small room can take up too much room and make the room seem smaller. It is also not proportional to the room. You may also add mirrors to make the room seem bigger and they reflect light. Place the mirrors strategically on the walls to get the desired effect.

Colors

For large dining rooms, you can play around with colors on the walls, furniture and on soft furnishings. You may have the main color that is neutral and accent it with accessories. For a smaller dining room, it is safer to stick to neutral colors with bold accents.
