The contemporary times are demanding that rooms should have multiple functions. A Zen bedroom provides just that. In as much as the decorations involve the use of Japanese accessories and relaxing colors, the Zen design also provides flexibility. The room can easily be transformed into its required use such as for projects, exercise or guests because its dividers and furnishings are easily movable.
Plan
The first thing in your Zen bedroom project is to plan. Have a layout that shows where the furniture will be placed. Use a floor plan on a piece of paper and use paper cutouts representing the furniture and the accessories to try out various arrangements based on the functions of the bedroom. The bedroom functions will determine the kind of cutouts you will have such as those for the bed, desk, cabinets and other needed items that will be on the floor. Arrange the cutouts on the floor plan until you are satisfied with the arrangements. While planning, mark areas that have immovable items such as the fireplace and the door openings. This will help you to have a harmonious design and a space that is not crowded.
Choose the colors
The Zen theme requires the use of soft and neutral colors. Soft colors maintain the Zen style of meditating. Some of the neutral colors that can be used in decorating are cream, black, taupe, gray, brown and tan. To create a calming mood in the bedroom, you can use green and blue colors. For a relaxed atmosphere, use tan or blue walls paired with cream bedding and dark brown furniture. You can also go bold with your decorations and use black furniture, cream walls and taupe bedding. Accent this with rust, deep orange or touches of red. The dynamic contrasts are still suitable for the Zen theme.
Arrangement of the furniture
The Zen bedroom uses flexible furniture. The central feature is the low bed or a futon. The traditional futon is more flexible such that if it is placed on the floor, it can be rolled up to create more space. The same case applies if the futon has a frame, and it can be converted into a sofa.
The cabinets have sliding doors and they provide space for storage to keep the room without clutter while maintaining clean lines. The bed bench is lightweight, and it is used when putting the shoes on. It is easily moved and can be used for sitting elsewhere. The room should also have a shoji screen to be used to hide exercise equipment or a desk when they are not being used.
Accessories
The Zen bedroom would not be complete without accessories. The accessories come in natural materials traditionally used in Japan. Shoji screens, lamps and rice paper shades are used to let the light through.
You can also use light colored curtains or sheers to bring in natural light to the room. Bamboo mats, wallpaper, shades and sheets are also accessories used in Zen's bedrooms. Bring life to the bedroom using plants such as bonsai.
