Designing a couples bedroom

Designing a couples bedroom

A couple’s bedroom can be challenging to design especially if the partners have extreme decorating preferences that are different. This means that the couple needs to compromise in order to design their bedroom. Both tastes can be incorporated and an intimate space created if color, materials and patterns are mixed creatively.

Choose the bed

The bed is the focal point of a bedroom, and it should be the first one in the room. The couple should therefore choose a bed that fits their both tastes and then base the rest of decorations around it. The bed should inspire you on how to decorate the rest of the room. If your design tastes are different, find a design that works for you. For instance, if one person favors a traditional style and the other likes a modern style, then look for a bed that is between these two styles. You could try a classic bed in sleek black finish. This way, each one partners needs will have been met.

Use neutral furniture and walls

Arguments on whether the room should have a dark masculine color or light feminine color can be settled by using neutral colors on the walls and on furniture. Use neutral shades such as cream, white, taupe and gray on the walls. The furniture should have neutral shades that are darker such as black or chocolate brown. If the two of you prefer a rustic look, use the natural wood finish on the furniture as the neutral color.

Accessories

The accessories you use in the room should be balanced, not too feminine or too masculine. Use items that will reflect the two styles. For instance, if you want a bedspread with floral prints do not use the soft pastels but try using a black and white combination or brown and blue. When using geometric patterns, choose designs that have feminine colors that are soft such as peach or rose. Instead of using large dark leather furniture that may be overwhelming to the room, use a small piece of furniture such as an upholstered bench or a small ottoman. Ensure that the accessories balance between the couples preferences in order to maintain balance in the bedroom.

Use soft lighting

The bedroom is a place for relaxing and retreating peacefully. It should have intimate and romantic vibe. This can be achieved by using soft lighting. If you are using overhead lights, include a dimmer for softening them to get the right mood. You should also include table lamps for bed reading and candles for romantic lighting.

Storage

With two occupants in a room, there is need for enough storage. Use closets for storage and if the space is not enough, look for other storage options. Use furniture that also provides storage space. For instance, you can use chest of drawers for storage if the room cannot have two dressers. The bench at the beds foot can also have storage space beneath. You can store items under the bed using shoe organizers and storage bins. All this is to ensure that the couple has enough storage for their belongings.
