How to clean and care for countertops

How to clean and care for countertops

Countertops in the kitchen and bathroom need to be cleaned and cared for. Countertops are made from different materials and therefore, their mode of cleaning and caring varies. Below is how you can clean and care for different types of countertops.

Granite counter tops

The countertops are cleaned by wiping with warm and soapy water with thorough rinsing. To avoid scratching the surface, do not use scrub pads or abrasive cleansers though a mild breach can be used. In case it has a stain, you can remove it using water and baking soda paste. You can also mix talc with diluted ammonia and hydrogen peroxide or bleach. Scrub the stained area with a soft brush and then paste rinse thoroughly. The same cleaning and removal of stains should be done for concrete countertops. A lot of garbage comes from homes, a fact that makes it important to manage it in order to save the environment and money. The tips below will help you to manage better the garbage.

Reduce the amount of garbage

There are measures you can take to reduce garbage in your home. Most garbage comes from plastic bags that are obtained during shopping. Reduce the usage of plastic by taking with you cloth bags while shopping for grocery, clothes and other items. Keep the bags where you can remember to pick them when going shopping. Buy food with less packaging. You can buy food items such as beans, spices and other dry foods in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging needed. Opt for homemade food instead of take-outs that need more packaging. Use returnable containers to buy dairy products instead of using plastics. Reduce the intake of bottled drinks and in their place use homemade drinks. That way, you will reduce the number of bottles in the waste. Improving draft on a metal chimney

Improving draft on a metal chimney

If the metal chimney is poorly drafting, it allows smoke to enter the home instead of exhausting outside. In order to correct the problem, you should find out what is causing the drafting problem. Some of the causes include starting hot fire on a cold chimney, a too large firebox in relation to the chimney pipe or the chimney having incorrect height. Below are some of the methods of improving drafting.

Warming the chimney

If a cold chimney causes the drafting problem, warm it to allow the smoke to move from the firebox to the outside. Roll a newspaper piece and light one of its ends. Hold it below the chimney system, allow it to burn, and then drop it on the fireplace to burn completely. This will warm the chimney to pull the smoke up. Light the fire immediately.

5 Most Common Homekeeping Issues

5 Most Common Homekeeping Issues

When building a home, designing a home, or remodeling a home, you should keep in mind what the people who are going to live in the home will have to do in order to keep the place clean, neat, and looking as good as the day they moved in. Before you decide what features will look awesome in a room consider the 5 most common homekeeping issues that home owners face.

1. Carpet in high traffic areas. Carpeting is warm beneath your feet and makes a room feel cozier, looks more lavish, and be quieter. Carpeting works well in bedrooms and areas of the home where you would like the noise to be dampened. Carpeting can quickly become problematic in high traffic areas and along main walkways. High pile carpets become matted and the piles lay down over time. Lower napped carpets often feel stiff, or rough beneath bare feet. As an interior design specialist who is creating a home for people to love, you will need to find a way to place the carpeting in the room and lessen the homekeeping issues with it. One way to do this is to place a runner over the high traffic areas of the room. The runner will pick up the dirt and the home owner can remove the runner, clean it, and then replace it. The runner can also be changed when the home owner redecorates so they can change the look without having to change the entire room of carpeting.

2. Light colored countertops stain easily. If the home is going to have children in it, then there are going to be spills on the kitchen countertops that can create stains. Consider using countertop materials that are non-porous so that they soak up less of the staining agents and remain looking great for a longer period of time. Marble is much more expensive than laminate countertops are, but laminate will stain when red Kool-Aid is spilled on it and marble will not.

Decorating Your Home

Decorating Your Home

Decorating a home makes it cozy and charming. You can achieve the new look by making major changes as well as including small decorative details in your home décor. Some of the DIY tips that you can use to decorate your home include:

Making major changes

This involves total overhaul of the home such as in the changing of paint and replacing the furniture. You can give your home a new look by painting the walls a new color. Make sure to choose a color that is suitable for your space and that complements your personality. If you are a fun loving person, a bright green or golden yellow paint will complement your personality and so will shades of blue or gray to a calm person. It will be best to experiment with different colors before settling on the one you like. You also do not have to use only one color in the whole house because you can paint a different color for each room. An accent wall can make your home décor more exciting and if you are not up to painting, you can use wallpaper or removable decals. New furniture can transform your home. Furniture plays an important part of the décor and you should choose styles and colors that suit your decorating style and personality. You do necessarily have to buy the store furniture if they do not fit your style. Thrift stores also have furniture that you can reupholster and repaint easily to meet your needs. Mix and match the furniture to get a unique look. You may also refurbish your old furniture instead of buying new furniture. Repaint the cabinets in the bathroom or kitchen and upholster the chairs and couches. Paint or stain the wood accents such as windowsills, doors and trim in a new color.
