DIY Cleaning Tips for Carpets

DIY Cleaning Tips for Carpets

After you paint your newly decorated room, you will put down your floor covering. Carpet is a widely chosen floor covering because carpets are warm under your feet, and they help to reduce noise in the home, but they create cleaning challenges, especially if you have children or pets. Hiring professional carpet cleaners can run into a lot of money, and you must be at home when they can come do the job. Luckily cleaning your own carpets has gotten easier than ever before.

You can rent a machine to clean your carpets with at many grocery stores, department stores, and vacuum sales stores. You can also buy a machine for homeowners to use for under two hundred dollars, and then you can clean your carpets as often as you like, at your convenience.

Cleaning Solutions:

•For every one cup of hot water, you can mix ¼ teaspoon of liquid dish washing detergent.

•You can mix one cup white distilled vinegar, 2 tablespoons baking soda, and fill the rest of the reservoir with hot tap water.

•You can use ½ teaspoon liquid laundry soap for every one cup of hot water.

•You can mix ½ cup of liquid fabric softener, ½ cup of all purpose cleaner, 1 gallon of hot water and ½ cup of household ammonia to create a powerful cleaner.

•You can mix ½ cup of powdered laundry detergent with one teaspoon household ammonia and one quart of hot tap water and whisk this together until the powdered detergent              melts into the water(you might have to vacuum after this solution dries because the powdered detergent sometimes leaves a residue behind)

•Mix one quarter cup flea shampoo with one gallon of water to create a flea killing carpet cleaner

Cleaning solution additives

•You can add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda to any solution that you create or buy.

•You can add a couple of tablespoons of borax to any solution that you make or buy. This will boost the strength of the cleaner and will also help to repel fleas if you have indoor           pets.

•You can add one quarter cup fabric refresher to any solution you make or buy.

•You can add one quarter cup mouthwash to any solution you make to eliminate foul odors.

•You can add one quarter cup boric acid to your solution and stir it in well to help eliminate pests in the home.

•You can mix fabric softener to any solution to help leave the fibers of the carpet softer.

You might be tempted to add bleach if you have very light colored carpet that has difficult stains, but this is something you should never do. Chlorine bleach can damage the hoses of the cleaning machine as well as damage the fibers of your carpet.

You should always pre-treat spots before cleaning to help increase the odds that the stains will come out. You can make a simple solution of one cup warm water, one cup white distilled vinegar, and on a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent. You whisk this mixture together so that it foams and then use a soft bristled scrub brush to use the froth to clean the stain away.
