What to Consider When Renovating Your Home

What to Consider When Renovating Your Home

With the housing market and the economy as a whole looking to stabilize, investment is back in the real estate market. While many homeowners believe buying new homes will serve them well in the long term, other homeowners are focusing on renovating their homes to match the latest trends. Home renovation is by no means an easy or quick feat, and depending on your long term needs with the property, it will cost accordingly.

That said modern home renovation is about blending all the elements and areas of a property to work cohesively as one theme. Here are some things that you must consider before investing in renovations.

The Budget

Budget remains the biggest concern when it comes to home renovation. There are people who get a decent renovation job for a fairly reasonable cost, but then they’re the only lucky ones. Renovations can sometimes cost a fortune, which is why you should consider what your objectives for home improvement are. Generally, there are three motivations behind every home renovation:

Smell: The Overlooked Sense in Interior Decorating

Smell: The Overlooked Sense in Interior Decorating

When designing a room, we tend to focus on what we can see—the walls, the floors, and the ceilings. But humans have four other senses as well, and when thinking about decorating, we often overlook those other senses. One of the most powerful senses a room can appeal to is smell. If you are cooking in a kitchen, you already have the smells of bread, cooking meat, and spices there. There are other ways to incorporate smells throughout the house.

Your space is personal, so why not personalize it? A few handy hints to adding your personal flavour to your surroundings.

Your space is personal, so why not personalize it? A few handy hints to adding your personal flavour to your surroundings.

Having a space to call your own is precious. Adding your personal flair and touches to it brings it to life. Frames are only for photos, right?

Wrong. A very nice way to add a focal wall with your own personal style is by having a frame collage. There are many ways to achieve a beautiful end result, and this is only limited by your imagination. A nice touch is to have only black and white photos on your feature wall, or only one color frames. Another is to have one style of frames in a variety of colors. How about swopping out the photos for love letters between you and your partner? If this is too personal, a nice add would be pictures drawn or painted by your children. Having them grouped together on a feature wall makes for an interesting eye diversion. Having frame boxes also opens a realm of possibilities. Boxes add that extra dimension, where you can include your child’s first toys, your wedding bouquet, souvenirs from trips or any item that was previously too small to display.

Add to this a crown, tiara and lavish jewels and you will look and feel like the most important person in the room. Send out your velvet coated invitations and contact your local costume party store to see whether you are an Elizabeth II or Henry VIII, Tsar or Tsarina. Hot Desert

Hot Desert

"Hot Desert" is the rather brutal phrase geographers use to describe the climate in Egypt's Red Sea Riviera.

It's brutal because the promise is actually more of a pampered, hedonistic holiday in the sun: beautiful people lounging by the pool, swimmers enjoying the company of dolphins and colorful fish, bikini-clad young women wistfully looking at a sea coloured azure, while dark-skinned locals mostly wear tailored servant uniforms and friendly smiles. The fun could be taking place somewhere like the Caribbean or the Cote d'Azur but this is Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera. And very few people had heard of it until the latter part of last century.Perhaps that’s because most of the shiny, beach-resort hotels aren’t on the Red Sea at all, but rather on the Gulf of Aqaba, a narrow strip of water separating Egypt’s Sinaï Peninsula eastern coast from Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Grasse: the world's capital of perfume

Grasse: the world's capital of perfume

Grasse, a commune on the French Riviera, is considered the world's capital of perfume - producing over two-thirds of France's natural aromas for both perfumes and for flavoring food.It lies inland from the south French coast about 30 minutes drive from Nice. Warm and sufficiently inland to be sheltered from the sea air, the countryside around the city is dominated by fields of flowers, including rose, jasmine, daffodil, carnation, tuberose, orange blossom, and violet.

People come here for the flowers with their delicate scents. They are grown in Grass thanks to its micro climate and three perfumeries - Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard - open their doors to the public and offer free tours that explain the processes of producing a perfume. It is possible to create your own perfume, eau de perfume or eau de toilette and participate in all stages of manufacture from picking flowers to bottling.

Keeping Your Home Cool and Your Energy Bills Low

Keeping Your Home Cool and Your Energy Bills Low

The summertime is officially over in most parts of the world as the autumn breeze has started to kick in. With winter just on the horizon, it’s time we clean up our heating and HVAC systems. That being said, summer is still raging strong in other parts of the world, and even in some parts of the US, including Arizona and Texas to name a few. Humidity in these parts of the country is always a challenge to your home and its energy efficiency. However, there are ways through which you can keep your home cool and your energy bills low.

Internal Heat

Ever had a feeling that your home is just hotter than other homes, despite the fact that it has less furniture? We have internal heating to blame for that, a result of heat emanating lighting fixtures, electronic devices, household appliances, and so on. All these electronics can raise the average temperature within your property. Hence, it is best to turn off any unnecessary lighting fixtures, electronics, and other things to preserve the temperature in your property. On another note, remember to keep any heat emitting devices far from the air conditioning unit. This will help you maintain cool temperatures in your property without incurring hefty energy bills.

Air Conditioning and Fans

Many people fail to realize that the air conditioning system contains a thermostat. When you enter a temperature for the air flow in the AC, let’s say 20° C, it will not deliver chilled air at 20° C. Instead, it will regulate the air in the area to 20° C. That way, the bigger the area is, the more energy your AC will consume. This, as a result, increases your energy bills significantly. If you have air conditioners in different areas of your home, make sure to keep them closed. This way, the AC will be able to regulate the temperature quickly, and will then work on standby as the temperature reaches the selected temperature.

Crete: more than just another Greek island

Crete: more than just another Greek island

Crete feels like more than just another of the Greek islands. It gives the impression of being a little country in its own right. But it's really the largest of the Greek islands, and arguably its most diverse and fascinating, with a remarkable history and a dynamic capital that is the fifth largest city in the whole of Greece. It is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea separating the Aegean from the Libyan Sea.

Crete is a favorite Greek Island that hosts nearly a quarter of Greece’s tourists. It's interior has a rural charm and famous archaeological sites, while the coast offers towns with fabulous seafood and, caves of historic significance including the famous one where Zeus, the king of the gods, is said to have been born. There is no best time to visit Crete; it depends on what you seek. In January to March the weather can be cold and rainy, but it is also the time when flowers start to grow, with almond trees blossoming in January, anemones are plentiful and the citrus trees are full of fruit. April is the time of the Greek Easter, the most important feast of the Cretan year. In May and June the good weather is almost guaranteed. July and August is the high season when the weather is very hot. In September and October the sea is still really warm. November and December are quiet but the chances of good weather are high and it's still possible to swim.

Bringing the Holidays to Work

Bringing the Holidays to Work

The holidays often have a lot of time dedicated to family and home time; however, many people have to keep their regular working schedules for the majority of the time. If your office allows it, decorating your area or cubicle can be a great way to bring the holidays to work with you, and if you’re able, you can even bring some friendly competition to the office and have decorating contests, Secret Santa games, and a White Elephant gift exchange. This way, you still feel like you are celebrating the season even when surrounded by your work family instead of your actual family.
