How to Mix Pillows in Interior Design

How to Mix Pillows in Interior Design

Throw pillows bring life to a room and therefore they are part of interior design. However, how you mix the pillows can make your decor either good or bad. It is therefore important for interior designers and individuals alike to know how to get the right mix of pillows. Sometimes the right mix can be achieved by trying different combinations. One of the common mixes is a patterned pillow and a solid pillow. You can use opposite colors such as blue and red on a neutral colored backdrop. You may also use subtle patterns on the pillows and have similar colors. Another mix of pillows is having one pillow with bold pattern and the other with a subtle pattern though the colors should coordinate.

If you use primary colors on the pillows, this can give you an opportunity to have them in different shapes such as bolsters, rectangles and squares. For instance, you can have pillows in yellow and blue but in different shapes and sizes. Mix floral pillows but make sure that the prints do not clash. Each pillow should have its unique floral prints and they should coordinate without clashing. In case the prints tend to clash, add another pillow and continue adding until they work.  On the other hand, you can use different patterns on the pillows but with the same color palette. Vary the size of the patterns by mixing small, medium and large patterns on the pillows.

Pillows of different colors and patterns can be mixed as long as they have one theme that ties them together. For instance, you can use geometric tribal patterns on pillows of different colors. Take a big geometric pillow, a small geometric and a bold floral and mix them. The pillows can be tied by opposite colors of blue and orange on the flowers and prints.
However, this does not mean you should stick to the rules and put aside your creativity and fun. Abandon the rules and mix if you are up for it. It may come out to be much better than the thought out pillow mixes. You may find that the mix simply works turning your home décor into something attractive.

Patterns in design

Patterns in design

Patterns form a big part of interior design. They appear on various items in the room such as on the pillows, carpets, rugs and on the wall among other places. Therefore, it is important to know the appropriate patterns to use when doing interior décor. There are traditional patterns and contemporary patterns. Traditional patterns consist of the floral types of patterns and figures that are recognizable, also known as historical, while contemporary patterns are based on geometric figures such as rectangles, circles, ovals and triangles. Floral can also be made less realistic by stylizing and abstracting to make them contemporary.

When decorating, you can use the patterns that you like as the basis for your decoration. You could be inspired to do your interior decoration by a pattern on the wallpaper, on a rug, beddings or on the upholstery. Contemporary patterns are usually taken from familiar objects such as animals. For instance, animal prints are a reflection of animals from the jungle such as leopards, zebras, cheetahs and lions. The patterns are on sheets, upholstery fabrics and draperies. You will also find patterns derived from domestic animals such as from cats, kittens, horses, dogs and chicken. Patterns of roosters are associated with country style and they range from cottage style to lord of the manor style.

Contemporary patterns also come in all sizes and in different shapes but with bold colors or boldly contrasting colors. Various designers use such patterns in the textiles that are widely used. The interior designers also use these patterns that have bold colors to update interiors of rooms. Woven patterns are common, especially when they are in silk and cotton. They are more serene than the busy printed patterns. Fabrics with these patterns are suited for large areas such as draperies and sofas due to their sophistication and elegance and their ability not to tire the eyes.

Decorating columns in a room

Decorating columns in a room

When doing interior design in a room, everything needs to be put into consideration including the interior columns that are in the room. They need to be decorated to enhance the beauty of the room. Columns when placed in a room create classical style. You may have either permanently placed columns or temporary lightweight columns. They can be decorated seasonally using candles, garlands, lights and chiffon or permanently with paint and texture. The tips below will  guide you on how to decorate the columns.

Before making any decorations, determine the theme of the decoration. It could be you are doing home décor for a wedding, party, Easter, Christmas or any other event. Base the decorating theme on the event. In case the decorations are permanent, select a theme that will go together with the decorations in the home. For temporary columns for use in a single event, spray paint them to save time. You can choose among their different finishes and colors to match furniture and other accessories in the house. For permanent painting, it is important to have a color palette, which you can use to select the colors you will paint the columns. This will ensure that you get the same color of paint from the stores and not different shades.

In case you want the columns to have a rustic look, learn how to carry out a Tuscan, barn or weathered finish on the columns depending on the materials you are using such as wood, stones or metal. If the finish is difficult for you, consider using the services of a professional. For other decorations, such as the use of flowers, chiffon and garlands, measure the space between columns. Determine your decorating materials while putting into consideration the strength of the columns. For strong columns, you can place candles and flower vases on top. If you have permanent columns in areas such as hallways, dining rooms and living rooms, you can use half columns for accent.

Portfolio for an interior designer

Portfolio for an interior designer

A portfolio is necessary for any interior designer, whether inspiring or an accustomed professional. This document portrays your previous outstanding projects that you have done together with photos, plans and CAD designs of the projects. The portfolio should also have a short biography and your resume to let the interested parties know about the work you have done and about yourself. The following tips will guide you on how to create a portfolio.

Decide on the case that you will use for your portfolio. While doing it, note that the first impression lasts and the case is the first thing the client will see. You should therefore choose the casing carefully and pick something that will work as a representative of your work. Some of the casings include leather binders, photo albums and empty journals. Write an introduction giving information about you, your work and your objectives. This will help the clients or employers to know about you and your background including the source of your motivation as a designer. Illustrate on what you intend to do when you are bidding on a particular job.

Add the projects you have undertaken in the portfolio. You do not need to have all the projects you have done included. You can select your best projects, the ones that make you proud. Having these projects in the portfolio will show your prospective clients or employers what you have already done and how you did it. Provide illustrations for the projects that you have put in the portfolio. Show how you have done interior design on the projects from the initial stage to completion. Show the designs, floor plans, photos and sketches of how you progressed while doing the project. Feel free to add other materials that helped you in the project if they will make understanding of the project better. Arrange the process that the project underwent in the order in which the events took place. This will make it easy for the person viewing the projects to understand their progression easily. You may also decide to write a description for each of the projects to make things clear.

Designing around the television

Designing around the television

If you have just acquired a television, you may be required to do your interior design around it. Just as soon as you bring it home, you may find that your furniture is not coordinating with the place the television should be placed, or it is blocking your wall art. The following tips will help you to make everything in your living room work together. The first thing you should do is to find the appropriate space for the television. In case yours is a flat screen, you have the benefit of viewing it from different angles in the room. Make sure that there are no obstacles blocking the television. Assess your living room for any obstacles by standing where the television is and seeing the items blocking the view. Decide where to place the television based on the obstructing object.

If you want the television to take the focal point, highlight the wall in which it is placed or hang by making it the accent wall. In case you prefer the television to blend in, you can place it where it will not draw much attention such as hiding it with artwork or housing it in armoire or an entertainment unit that can be closed. Decorate the wall based on the viewing height of the television. If it is placed on low console, you can decorate the wall behind with artwork. If the television is mounted on the wall, then having artwork on it will be distracting. It is therefore preferable to mount the television on the wall for large rooms and to use low consoles for smaller spaces.
