Latest Flooring Trends

Flooring forms an important part of interior design. The type of floor you use, its design and color affect the overall outcome of your decoration. There are different types of materials used in flooring and how you use them depends on your specific needs. The most common one is the traditional wood flooring, although more durable and cost effective materials such as bamboo and vinyl are replacing it. Below are the types of flooring that are currently being used in home décor.

Bamboo flooring

The use of bamboo for flooring is growing due to the coming up of more styles and colors despite it being around for a while. Bamboo is a fast growing grass which when dry is harder than most hard woods. The latest product known as strand woven bamboo is highly engineered with the use of inner fibers, making it two times harder than flooring using traditional bamboo. It is available in thin-banded styles and in wide plank style that looks like the classic hardwoods. It is advisable not to use bamboo flooring in kitchens and bathrooms because they are prone to moisture.

Mirrors in Interior Design

Mirrors in Interior Design

Mirrors are an important component in interior design. They are used to make a room feel spacious with their light reflecting capabilities. This makes a room brighter with the reflection fooling the eye of the presence of more space than there is. Using mirrors is making a comeback and decorators are using this trick in their designing. One of the uses of a mirror is in dark rooms where they seem to have less space. You can strategically place mirrors in such a room to increase light. One of the places to put the mirror is on the wall opposite the window in order for it to reflect light and make the room brighter. A mirror, preferably full length, can be placed on the entrance way on the wall the eyes see first to make the space seem larger.

For a small space, in areas such as the bedroom or the dining room, cover a wall with mirrors. This will open up the space while creating a sense of increased area. Placing a bed or a table next to a wall that is mirrored makes them appear larger and make the space feel doubled. You can also place mirrored place-mats on a dining table to increase the reflective effect. Mirrors can also be placed next to a fireplace in a room that feels dark and cramped. The mirror reflects the flames and the glow, therefore creating a sense of spaciousness and glow at night.

If your entrance way is dark, you can light it up and make it seem larger with a ceiling mirror. The same can be done on bathrooms and back porch areas. Placing mirrors in the entire ceiling brightens the dull rooms by spreading the light when the lights are turned on. The mirrors also give an illusion of skylight especially in pantries and windowless toilets. For a room that does not have a window, you can hang a mirror on the wall at eye level. Add a shelf under it to place the lamp. Because the lamp is placed in front of the mirror, when it is turned on, the mirror diffuses the light into the entire room.

Decorating a Modern Living Room

Decorating a Modern Living Room

Modern living rooms are the current trend in interior design. The rooms are decorated based on neutrality and minimalism. The dominant colors should be neutral while the bold colors can be in accessories and accents. The modern style also advocates the use the necessary items in the room while removing clutter. The following tips can help you to convert your living room into a modern one.

To design the living room to a modern one, due to its minimalist nature, you need to use neutral colors such as beige, white or black. The accents are the ones that should have a splash of bold colors or patterns such as tangerine orange, red or lime green, in order to interest the eyes. Furniture and the floor should be sleek and smooth with a glossy appearance. You should therefore use granite, linoleum or concrete for flooring. Accent the furnishings using steel, black lacquered wood and chrome.

The shapes used in modern style living rooms are squares and rectangles with angular edges and straight lines. You may also use perfect circles. The décor also require more flow of light, both natural and artificial with a blue white glow. Due to the neutrality of the room, you should use sculptures and modern paintings for focal point and conversation. This means that when you are decorating, paint the walls white, the preferred color. You may also use off-white shades such as cream or beige. This is to keep the walls neutral and the room to stand out. To maintain eye interest, include artwork of a painting or two on the wall. Put a statue on a coffee table or on end table. It could be a statue of a living thing such as a cat, or it can be a statue of a modern geometric design.

Remove the clutter in one room and after you are through, go to another room. By the end of it, you will find that you have removed the clutter from all the rooms in the home.

Furniture takes a lot of space and therefore, you should start by removing the ones that you do not need. Make sure that the room has few pieces of furniture as possible as long as what is left is enough for comfort. Use furniture that is simple and had subdued colors. Assess the other items in the room and determine the essentials and those things that you can do without using. Remove the non-essentials so that the room has only what you need. Also, remove all the items on the floor. You should leave the floor clear with nothing stored on it. For the items you do not need, you can donate them, throw away or keep them out of sight.

Make sure that the other flat surfaces in the room are clear, except for one or two decorative items. For instance, you can have place flowers on the table. Store the other items that you need out of sight, in cabinets and drawers which should also be uncluttered. The walls should also be clear and have just a few pieces of good artwork such as a painting, photo or drawing. The decorations that you use should be simple a good example being a flower vase.
