Tips on adding accessories in bedroom

Tips on adding accessories in bedroom

Accessories make a room appear attractive and inviting. If you are doing interior design, a room cannot be completely decorated without including them because they complement the design while adding aesthetic value. They should also represent the tastes and personality of the owner of the room. Some of the things used to accessorize include wall art, antiques, collectibles, sculptures, memorabilia and throw pillows. Below are helpful tips on accessorizing a room.

Find the accessories

Since accessories should portray your tastes, the best place to find them is in your belongings. Go through things that you have accumulated overtime such as souvenirs, keepsakes and collections.

Keep in mind the theme of the room

The theme and style of the room determines the kind of accessories used. They should work with the theme and not against it. For instance, a contemporary theme cannot do well with a Victorian heirloom because it would seem out of place.

Be keen on the colors of the accessories

The colors that your accessories have are important because they need to complement the theme and style of the room. Choose the colors of your interior design accessories based on the effect you would like them to have on the room. Accessories with contrasting colors end up standing out and creating a visual pop while those with colors that are monochromatic tend to blend in creating a soothing effect.

Decide on where to display

Accessories can be displayed anywhere in the room in areas such as the shelves, on the wall, fireplace mantles, tables, on counter tops, couches and on the floor.

Display in groupings

For the accessories to have visual significance and weight, they should be grouped. A small object in a room may disappear. When grouping ensure that you follow guidelines such as:
i.    The use of symmetry. For a formal feel, the accessories need to be grouped evenly and in symmetry. Informal or relaxed setting should have accessories grouped in odd numbers or in asymmetry.
ii.    Have a common element. The grouped accessories should have a common thing such as color, size or theme. If its family photos, they can have similar framing.
iii.    Group objects with different heights.

Put accessories of different textures together

Accessories are meant to give the room an attractive feel. Grouping them in different textures creates an interesting visual effect. For instance, you can group a green glass sculpture together with a green jug made of pottery and a green shell. You can also put a cotton throw pillow on an armchair upholstered in silk.

Note the size of accessories in comparison with the room

Accessories should complement the design of a room. That is why they should be visible but not taking over the design. Large accessories are not suitable in a small space since they will dominate the space. The same case applies with small accessories, which might disappear in a large space. The best way to place the accessories is to start with the largest going down. As you place accessories, check to see if the arrangement has clutter. You can regroup or replace items until satisfactory arrangement is achieved.
