Do It Yourself Cages for Housing Your Pet Snake

Do It Yourself Cages for Housing Your Pet Snake

Pet snakes all need one thing: a place to live. If you want a pet snake, you need to figure out what kind of cage it needs. Going to a local pet store, or ordering a cage online, may not be the answer. For one thing, commercial cages are often too small for a pet snake. Also, prices of commercial cages range anywhere from under $10.00 to over $300. So, if commercial cages aren’t big enough and too expensive, what do you do? Well, with an investment of time, elbow grease, and a little money, it’s possible to create your own snake cage.

Before Building Your Snake Cage

There are plenty of ways to build a snake cage. Some of you may want to build your own cage from scratch. Others may use existing items such an old aquarium cage. Some creative reptile owners have even taken old furniture and re purposed it for a reptile cage.
But before building your snake cage, ask:

    •    How big is the snake?
    •    What size of a cage do you need? For snakes up to six feet long, you need ½ square foot of floor space per foot of snake.  For snakes six to nine feet long, allow ¾ square foot of floor space.
    •    Can you maintain the necessary heat and humidity for the snake to survive?
    •    Can the snake get out of the cage?
    •    Is the cage easy to clean?
    •    How do you want to cage to look?

Once you’ve answered those questions, you can start designing and creating your cage.

Materials for a Snake Cage

You can choose from wood, glass, screen, melamine, or other substances. Glass containers, such as aquarium tanks, are good for keeping small snakes. Use a screen top to properly ventilate a snake cage for desert-type snakes such as a sand boa. If the snake needs a more tropical habitat, wrap the screen top with Saran Wrap, put soil inside, and add some plants to raise the humidity.

Melamine, used in counter tops, is a good building material.  It’s easy to work with and easy to clean. When used with a glass front, it holds humidity well. The main disadvantage of melamine is that it is heavy, and cages made of melamine will not be easy to move.

Plywood is a much cheaper alternative to melamine. It is also easier to work with. However, the higher the grade of plywood, the more expensive it is to buy.  A less expensive alternative to plywood is medium density fiberboard (MDF).MDF can be painted, and holds humidity well when used with material such as Contact paper.

If you don’t have the tools to work with wood, try PVC pipe and wire mesh, or use Plexiglas. Both are very good materials to use if you’re building a cage for a large snake, such as a boa constrictor.

There are plenty of instructions available on the Internet for building a snake cage. Designing and building your own will give your snake a happy home.
