Painting Color Rules for Small Spaces

Painting Color Rules for Small Spaces

Small rooms such as apartments can pose challenges when it comes to painting. Before embarking on this DIY project, it is important to make a few considerations. You should have a theme; put into consideration the furniture pieces in there and the colors that will be suitable for different rooms in your home. However, if you follow the rules to the letter, you will hardly go wrong in your home improvement project.

The first rule of painting colors, is keeping it simple. Even where you would want to create a dramatic effect, in a small room, it will appear overpowering more than appealing.  On the walls and ceilings, ensure to stick to two colors. If you have carpeted your room, choose colors that will blend with your rugs.  Keep away from sophisticated wallpaper designs, as they will attract attention to the small stature of the room. In a small room, it is best if you incline towards lighter shades. Dark colors will only make the room to look and feel smaller, than it is already is. Some of the rooms that are smallest in the house include bathrooms, bedrooms, home office and the laundry room. Do not restrain the space in these areas by painting them in dark colors. If you must apply dark hues, be sure they are not dominant.

Where you have multiple colors in a room, ensure to arrange them in a scheme, such that the dark colors occupy the lower area of the walls and the bright hues at the top.  The same goes with the floor, if your bathroom has dark green tiles, the walls must carry a brighter color. For instance, a yellow or an olive color will look great on the walls. In addition, let the ceiling to feature a brightest of shades. Another rule of painting a small room is to use color to add depth. Do this by coloring some accents in your home such as a radiator.  You will also add some excitement and visual space, if you paint the interiors of your bookshelves. In addition, you can do the same to the windowsill. If you are fortunate to own a hall or a foyer, paint it with a dark color and your living area with brighter colors, to make it feel spacious.  Lastly, if you want to make your small room, appear large and inviting consider creating a feature wall. Paint all the other walls in the same hues and contrast them by painting a different color on one wall. This can make a small room to be awesome. Do not be afraid of bold colors though, they can make the space look larger by pushing the wall backwards.

Painting is cheap way of decorating a home. However, in small spaces, it can create havoc, if you do not know what works or what does not. The above rules can enable you to pull through your DIY painting project. By the end of it all, you will have a room that is vibrant and feels spacious.
